University of Houston Clear Lake Day of Service

Last month we had the honor of being chosen by the University of Houston Clear Lake as a site for their annual day of service for their students. We hosted college students at one of the juvenile justice facilities we serve. The UHCL students rolled up their sleeves and worked side by side with our kids in a facility grounds beautification project. They pulled weeds, mulched, planted new flower beds around the exterior of the building, potted plants for the reception area where family visitation takes place, and even thoroughly cleaned the inside and outside of one of the county vans that transports kids. Even though the work was hard the students and our kids thoroughly enjoyed their efforts and were proud of the outcome.

The best part was when they stopped for lunch. We served lunch in the dining hall of the facility and the college students had time to talk with our kids one on one. For our kids to connect with college students is huge! It opens their minds to a better understanding of higher education and to realize that these college students were not so different from themselves. Many of our kids have never even considered attending college before because they have not been exposed to those opportunities. The UHCL students also learned a lot about the kids we serve and the need for them to have posi nts had such a great time with our kids that they are now official YFC volunteers!
